LG BD 390 Network Blu-ray Disc Player

LG BD 390 Network Blu-ray Disc Player Review

My father decided he wanted to go All Digital with his AV equipment. This included a Blu-Ray player. I tried to talk him out of Blu-Ray, since I had just managed to donate several boxes of his old VHS tapes and dreaded the prospect of him re-re-buying his favorite movies, this time in Blu-Ray. But the more I researched the different players, the more excited I became. Today's Blu-Ray players, and this one in particular, are far more than stand-alone disc players. They now compete for dominance over all of your AV activities.

The LG BD390 is a gem. After My father got his and we got everything going, I ended up buying 2 for my own house, my brother bought one, and friend bought one for himself. I own 1 Blu-Ray disc, and it plays that disc very well. But that's not why I bought it. Over the years, I have managed to rip most of my CDs and DVDs to hard drives. I now have an NAS (network storage device) on my local network. The LG BD390 immediately detected my NAS and has been able to play almost all of the digital media from it without complaints. Originally, I had stored the video as AVIs, but recently have been storing them as MKVs. The BD390 doesn't care. It plays them all with impunity. Same with MP3s.

In addition, my eldest daughter can use the BD390 to watch Harry Potter Puppet Pals on YouTube and, much to my horror, my youngest can watch the Gummi Bear video until my ears bleed.

Another thing that sets this player apart from the rest is the inherent Wireless N. It's built in and doesn't cost extra. Setting it up is swift and easy, but I use a wired connection.

Before I discovered this unit, I was using TVersity on a home server to watch my videos through my DirecTV DVR (THE PAIN!) The BD390 was on sale for 0 and I kept thinking, "Holy Cow! I don't have to buy a dedicated Home Media Center computer (much more expensive)and I don't have to put up with with my old MacGyver setup ANY MORE! I'll take two!"

And I did.
